FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Film Now Showing at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery NHS
RICHMOND, BC - June 5, 2018: The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society is pleased to announce the release of a new film Ebb & Flow: Turning Points in the History of West Coast Fishing, now showing in the Boiler House Theatre at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site. The film will screen on an hourly schedule, replacing Journey Through Time, which visitors to the Cannery have enjoyed for over twenty years.
Ebb & Flow, written and produced by Sean Embury and Rebecca Clarke, explores Canada’s West Coast commercial fishing industry through archival imagery, and interviews with current and former industry members. The film explores how turning points in immigration, economic change, social movements and technological progress have all affected the fishery’s evolution.
The 25-minute film, produced with support from the Province of British Columbia, will complement the heritage tours offered at the Cannery. The film is also available online for teachers across the province to use the film as a class resource within the BC Social Studies curriculum.
Executive Director, Char Murray commented, “The film is a tribute to the men and women who worked in the fishing industry and celebrates the role that fishing has played in the economic, social and geographical development of British Columbia. The Board of Directors and myself would like to thank all of those who were involved with this exciting project and invite you to come to the Cannery and experience Ebb & Flow.”
The film is included in the Cannery’s admission fee and screens at :30 every hour (when the theatre is not in use for a program or event). It is also available with French, Chinese, and Japanese subtitles.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society’s mission is to preserve, present and promote Canada’s West Coast fishing history.
The Society operates the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site on behalf of Parks Canada.
