Summertime and the living is easy at the Royal BC Museum
VICTORIA, BC-This June ushers in summer hours and events at the Royal BC Museum.
Dennis Minaker, Royal BC Museum volunteer, researcher and author will talk about the social, sporting and architectural history of the Gorge at Live at Lunch: The Gorge Waterway - Victoria's playground 1890-1930<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/106035/live-lunch-gorge-waterway-victorias-playground-1890-1930>. This talk takes place on Wednesday, June 6 at noon in Newcombe Conference Hall. Admission is by donation.
Explore the beach with Curator of Vertebrate Zoology Dr. Gavin Hanke and Invertebrates Collection Manager Heidi Gartner at Fieldtripper: In Seine<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105919/fieldtripper-seine>. They will identify the fish and invertebrates (animals without backbones) that live just beneath the waves. Meet at the north end of Willows Beach in Oak Bay (look for the large white Royal BC Museum van) on Saturday, June 16 at noon. This event runs until 2:00 pm and participation is by donation (suggested donation is $5).
Dr. Dennine Dudley, seasonal instructor at the University of Victoria, is giving a talk on Egypt's 18th dynasty. The lecture, Mystery, Majesty and the Mundane in New Kingdom Egypt<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105916/mystery-majesty-and-mundane-new-kingdom-egypt>, includes intriguing figures like Hatshepsut, the female king, Tutankhamun, the boy king and Akhenaten, the enigmatic king. She'll discuss shifting political allegiances and complicated family dynamics while referencing artifacts from the Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs exhibition on display at the Royal BC Museum. Thursday, June 21 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm in Newcombe Conference Hall. Please note this event does not include admission to the Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs exhibition. Tickets are $15 (10 per cent off for members).
Join our panel for a participatory discussion at It's Complicated: Dating Can Be Queer<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105864/its-complicated-dating-can-be-queer>. Take part in this conversation about navigating dating while incorporating gender and sexual fluidity. This free event takes place on June 28 from 5:15 pm to 7:00 pm in Newcombe Conference Hall.
Starting June 3 Helmcken House and St. Ann's Schoolhouse are open daily<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/106017/helmcken-house-and-st-anns-schoolhouse> from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Visiting these two heritage houses is included with admission or is by donation.
>From June 1 to August 31 the Food Truck Festival relaxes into longer summer hours, open Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Enjoy those warm summer nights eating a variety of food in our cozy and sheltered back courtyard. Have a drink with your selection of food when the Beer and Wine cart is open Saturdays and Sundays in June from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. It's one of the best, most convenient places downtown to grab a quick bite to eat and sit outside, baking in the summer sunshine.
See over 300 original artifacts in the new feature exhibition Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/exhibitions/egypt> at the Royal BC Museum. Learn what life was like for people in ancient Egypt, from the Pharaoh to the fishmonger. Get hands-on with interactive multi-media and games at this family-friendly exhibition. Included with membership or by admission.
June 5 is the 160th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of St. Ann in Victoria. To celebrate this milestone, the Royal BC Museum is featuring a free Pocket Gallery display in Clifford Carl Hall: A Legacy of Healing: The Sister of St. Ann in British Columbia.
A travelling display, Dominion Astrophysical Observatory: The First 100 Years<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/exhibitions/dao>, is on view in Clifford Carl Hall until Sunday, June 30. The small, ten panel exhibit, created in partnership with the National Research Council of Canada, presents the amazing story of its founder, construction and some of the major contributions made to our understanding of our galaxy and the universe. Free in Clifford Carl Hall.
