Maritime Museum of BC Unveils Plaque Commemorating the SS Princess Sophia

Join the Maritime Museum of BC for a short commemorative presentation on the sinking of the SS Princess Sophia, followed by the unveiling of a new plaque, which will be permanently installed in the Parade of Ships memorial wall in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

The Victoria-based coastal liner struck Vanderbilt Reef, in Alaska’s Lynn Canal, on October 23, 1918 and sank on October 25,1918. Everyone on board perished including an estimated 367 passengers and crew. The sinking of the SS Princess Sophia remains the largest marine tragedy in the Pacific Northwest.

The event will begin with a short presentation by Rachel Trudeau, Public Engagement Manager at the Maritime Museum of BC, at 10:30 AM on October 25^th at the Maritime Museum of BC, with the plaque unveiling to follow immediately.

A documentary on the sinking of the vessel, as well as the enlarged replica of the newly released SS Princess Sophia Canadian coin, will be on display at the event.
