Take a look through her eyes in new show at Kelowna Art Gallery

Through Her Eyes: Works from Our Permanent Collection
August 24 to November 17, 2019

August 20, 2019 - Kelowna, BC: To look through someone else's eyes is to see or experience something with a sense of directness, albeit from a different perspective. Through Her Eyes: Works from Our Permanent Collection explores landscape in this context, through the eyes and particular vision of fourteen women artists, whose work is drawn from the Kelowna Art Gallery's permanent collection.

Among the artists included are Judy Burns, Nellie Duke, Ann Kipling, Mary Smith McCulloch, Daphne Odjig, and Erin Shirreff. The exhibition presents a diverse selection of work from 1930 to the present in a variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, video, and photography.

Many of the artworks are smaller in scale and on paper rather than monumental and on canvas. While there are works that present large impactful vistas, many show micro- rather than macrocosms, zeroing in on singular plants, patterns in the landscape, close-up or partial portraits, and abstract or emotive compositions.

Grace Willis' watercolours depict the landscape of Revelstoke and surrounding areas, while Judy Burns' photo essay The Western Star Project documents workers at the Kelowna truck manufacturing plant in 2001, a year before it was slated to close. Also included are the last works by Daphne Odjig (2014 - 2015), made before she passed away in 2016, and a 44-minute shifting landscape video by Erin Shirreff entitled Lake.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore for themselves the many different views of landscape presented. Through Her Eyes: Works from Our Permanent Collection is guest curated by Corinna Ghaznavi, a freelance curator and writer based in Durham, Ontario. It is on view from August 24 to November 17, 2019.

A tour and talk with exhibition curator Corinna Ghaznavi will be held on Friday, August 23, 2019, at 5 pm. It will be followed by an opening reception, from 6 to 8 pm. A number of the participating artists will be in attendance. This is a free event, open to Gallery members and guests, by invitation.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in downtown Kelowna. For more information about current exhibitions, public programming or special events, please visit the Kelowna Art Gallery online at www.kelownaartgallery.com<http://www.kelownaartgallery.com> or call 250-762-2226.
