*Calling all Curators, Exhibit Designers, Conservators and Researchers! Our
meet-ups are bi-monthly and hosted by various organizations around
the Lower Mainland. Each meet-up will look at an exhibit “case study” and
offer participants a chance to discuss newly launched exhibits at
neighbouring institutions. We all work hard for our exhibits – let’s share
those lessons learned!*

Our January Lower Mainland Curatorial Group meeting will be hosted by
Director Diane Panozzo and Museum Curator Dr. Elizabeth Peterson of
the *Vancouver
Police Museum and Archives*.
*Dueling Narratives: Challenges for museums’ working in heritage spaces*
The Vancouver Police Museum and Archives (VPMA) is located in the historic
Vancouver City Coroner’s Services and City Analysis Laboratory building. In
operation from 1932-1996, this building reflects a unique part of
Vancouver’s history not often explored or shared by traditional histories.
The interior has maintained many of the original features including the
morgue, autopsy suite, and forensic lab (which during its time, was one of
the first forensic labs in all of North America). Architecturally the
building is a fine example of Vancouver Georgian Revival style and
structurally reflects both advances in technology and city planning.
As custodians of the building, the museum strives to preserve and share the
building’s heritage, seeing it as part of the museum collection. But as
with all historic buildings, the museum has faced challenges with this
space. With the revitalizing and restoring of the different rooms in the
building over the last two years, one of the biggest challenges has been in
how to create diverse exhibits that still allow the space’s narrative to be
told. Join us for a talk and a walk through our building where we will
share our experiences and history of working within this unique and
wonderful space.
