Hello everyone,

A researcher at the University of Turin recently contacted me about wanting
to find a BC museum (or cultural heritage site) partner to test best
practices for deploying smartphones as public engagement tools as part of
his Ph.D. research.

His name is Ahmad Nasrolahi and he has funding from the European Union for
his project. He sent along the following description of his work:

"Community participation (in general terms) in the cultural heritage
conservation has been a concern ever since the Venice Charter (1964) and is
still to this day. In addition, the Faro Convention (2005) adapted to shift
the focus from the conservation of cultural heritage values to the value of
cultural heritage for the society. So, it is necessary to engage local
people in all stages of cultural heritage conservation and management.

In this case, the question is how participatory approach in the cultural
heritage management must be applied? There are no recognized methods for
applying community participation in heritage conservation. Since these days
the use of smartphone applications is common across the world and they are
used for almost everything, a wide range from buying tickets to scan QR
codes, I believe that using smartphones are effective in the community
engagement approach.

I am writing a smartphone app now, as a part of my Ph.D. thesis, and I am
going to test it in different contexts. I am looking for case studies in
Australia, Asia, and Canada in order to apply the application in diverse
contexts. "

If anyone is interested in speaking to Ahmad about his project, please let
me know and I can connect you with him. He's looking to come to Canada for
2 months in the Spring of 2020 to conduct his research.

All the best,

Ryan
