*“I have an old, old…..” – Putting Sustainable Artefact Collecting into
Practice*

Presented by Kevin MacLean (Galt Museum and Archives)

Museums face daily challenges in their obligation to care for ever growing
collections. For some, it begs the question, “Why do museums devote so much
energy to looking after stuff that is relatively the same in all museums?”
In the past decade-plus, the Galt Museum in Lethbridge, AB has shifted its
collecting outlook from a focus on scale and proverbial “old stuff” to
maximizing objects’ unique values and stories.

Objects’ voices in the Museum should come from persons intimately familiar
with them. Intangible voices are what make the Galt’s objects unique to its
communities and region, expanding their value for interpretation, personal
connection and Museum use. The greater the extent to which we develop our
objects’ intangible value, the more useful objects are to us. Museums can
do more with less. Simply being “old” is not good enough.

Join Museum Collections Tech Kevin MacLean as he describes this new
approach and how it has led to a more efficient use of resources at the
Galt Museum.
