“I was born in Bosnia and immigrated to Canada in 1995 at the age of 12,
after living through a civil war,” shares Kelowna artist Mirjana
Borovickic, the Caetani Centre’s inaugural UBCO Faculty of Creative and
Critical Studies (FCSS)/Caetani Artist-in-Residence.

Currently, she’s working with textiles and acrylic on a large mixed media
series titled *Resident Child.* In this series she explores her childhood
memories and war trauma, creating images from her past using previously
owned garments, mostly from her own children.

“It’s been a self-guided therapy session for me. I’ve been able confront my
difficult past and release emotions I had suppressed since childhood.”

Throughout her life Mirjana has always been fascinated with textiles; her
love for textiles was further developed during her teenage years when she
opted to take sewing in high school.

She graduated with a BFA in Visual Arts from the University of British
Columbia, Okanagan in 2019.

Come meet Mirjana and experience her show, *Resident Child,* during the
opening reception on Monday, July 29th, 7pm - 9pm, as well as during
gallery hours on Tuesday, July 30th from 11am-4pm in the Caetani Cultural
Centre Studio Gallery.

This new partnership between UBC Okanagan and Vernon’s Caetani Cultural
Centre is helping make artistic dreams come true for two UBCO
student-artists.

To have a residency funded by the new UBCO/Caetani partnership removes the
barriers of the very-real financial challenges a number of artists face
working full-time on their art career, explains Bryce Traister, dean of
UBCO’s Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS).

Caetani Centre’s Artist-in-Residence programs are available to artists
working on creative projects anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months in length.

The artist stays and creates at the Caetani Cultural Centre and is invited
to share workshops, readings and exhibitions with the North Okanagan
community.
