The Pitt Meadows Museum has been offered but cannot take a quilting frame
from a local donor. She has asked if we can attempt to find another museum
or gallery that might want it. Her information on the frame is as follows:
Quilting frame, stained solid wood, possibly fir; built by my father in the
1950's for my mother and grandmother; based on a design from the 19th and
early 20th century
Components
Two squared poles ("rollers"), one with a cogwheel on each end Both poles
covered in cotton, with ties Two reinforced end legs with slots to adjust
the width between the poles A pawl (lever) on each end leg that engages with
the teeth of the cogwheel on the corresponding pole end
Dimensions
When in use, fully extended:
37"W x 101"L x 32"H
When disassembled for storage (poles lift off; feet on legs fold in):
legs 7"W x 38"L x 32"H;
poles 6"W x 101"L x 6"H
Function
The top, batting and lining of the quilt are basted together and attached to
the cloth along each pole, then rolled up so most of the quilt is on one
pole. The cloth ties keep the sides taut.
As the quilting progresses, the finished quilt is rolled from one pole to
the other.
If there is an interested party out there, please email the Pitt Meadows
Museum and we will pass you the donor's contact information.
Thank you,
Leslie Norman
