Hello All,

I know some of you have read in the BCMA Facebook that HAMM in Courtenay experienced our second flood almost to the day from the first one, last Wednesday. Due to a severe rain event water once more came up through our concrete floor to a depth of about 2cm. All but three of our cases are on casters so there was no damage to cases or to any of our artefacts. With an emergency post on Facebook, we received a large amount of volunteers to rush to the museum to help move everything possible to a safe location across the hall.

We have managed to reopen a temporary office and have evacuated our summer exhibit out of our main facility and have it set up in our temporary office for the duration of the planned exhibit (September 28). A SAILOR'S SKETCHBOOK at least gives the visitor something to see of our museum for the next couple of months.

Insurance is only going to pay for repairs to the building (the wall that had to be removed to exam where the water is flowing in) and the cost of Servicemaster to come in and suck out all the water. In face they are still sucking water out of the air and we are into our 10th day.

I would like to ask if your museums or organizations could assist us by posting our urgent need to raise funds so we can replace our floor as soon as possible and move back in.

We know it is a stretch, but we really are praying to reopen in time for the 75th Anniversary of the Sinking of HMCS ALBERNI which occurs on August 21. It will be a very difficult deadline for us to reach, but we can providing we have the help of others at this time of water. It is appropriate that we raise ourselves above the water on the day that 59 men of Alberni were taken to their final resting place off the English Channel in 1944.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
the torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
we shall not sleep,
though poppies grow in Flanders Fields.
