[BCMA] Fire at HAMM

Hello All,

This morning we had an arsonist set fire to our news stand/brochure rack at our front doors, as well as damaging one of our display units in the hallway next to it.  Fortunately a passerby happened to catch him in the act and the damage was limited to smoke inside the main hall, and a bit of scorching on our front door and outside wall.

I am writing for two reasons.

1.  Since ALL of our brochures from BCMA museums went up in flames, we need to replace your brochures in preparation for the summer tourist season.  We can use anywhere from 30-50 brochures from each member if you want.  Please use the Museum street address below.

2. This has been the second minor disaster that could have become catastrophic since we have been in this new location.  In the past we have never worried about finding funding for building/renter/content insurance.  After this episode today I want to present the need to our Board of Directors to get ourselves insured for more than just our liability insurance.

Is there a BCMA or CMA group insurance plan that you use?  Or how does your museum deal with insurance for contents in case of flood (we had one in 2017) or fire (today)?

PS.  I strongly suggest that you contact your fire alarm system company for a test of your system.  Our smoke detector did not activate even though it was directly over the door where the fire had been started.  I have contacted our security provider regarding this malfunction.  Had we not had that person walking past at the time the fire was set or had it happened on a day when our museum was closed but the main building is open, things could have been different.
