*British Columbia goes GLAM*
Galleries, libraries, archives and museums gather to share practical ideas
and local solutions
*VICTORIA, BC *– British Columbia’s GLAM (gallery, library, archives and
museums) sector partners – BC Museums Association, BC Library Association
and Archives Association of BC – proudly present the second annual GLAM
symposium in Surrey on May 8, 2019.
*Here and Now: Practical Ideas, Local Solutions for Galleries, Libraries,
Archives and Museums* will showcase the power of collaboration in the GLAM
sector and set the agenda for future innovation and partnership. Participants
from across the province will come together for a day of learning and
discovery as they listen to their colleagues’ achievements and aspirations
for the sector.
“Museums are hubs for history, culture and art in their communities, as
well as partners for other memory institutions like libraries and
archives,” says Erica Mattson, Executive Director, BC Museums Association.
“We are excited to see what big ideas emerge as leaders from all corners of
BC come together to think, listen and envision the collective future of our
dynamic GLAM sector.”
Dr. Andrea Walsh, Associate Professor at University of the Victoria and a
visual anthropologist, will deliver the keynote address and discuss her
experiences repatriating residential school artwork and returning these
pieces to survivors. Scott Hargrove, Chief Executive Officer at Fraser
Valley Regional Library, will deliver the technology keynote address. The
day will also include a community leaders panel discussion on innovative
models and community impacts, and a GLAM SLAM with short 5-minute talks
from sector professionals.

In 2017, British Columbia was the first province in Canada to formalize
cooperation amongst the GLAM sector. The BC Museums Association, BC Library
Association and Archives Association of BC signed a Memorandum of
Understanding <http://museumsassn.bc.ca/about-us/mandate-governance/glam/>
outlining the organizations willingness to share expertise, embark on
collaborative research projects, explore public outreach opportunities and
identify joint funding ventures to strengthen the sector.
