The Vancouver Maritime Museum

launches a new online public database for its collections.

The Vancouver Maritime Museum (VMM) is pleased to announce the launch of the public online database for its collection.

This new website makes public the artifacts, archives and other reference materials for researchers, other museum professionals and the general public. Visitors to the site can browse general collections and holdings at the VMM, and conduct more detailed searches. Developed by Whirl-i-Gig in consultation with museum staff, the online database will provide information about its holdings. Users of the site to contact curatorial and archives staff with questions or additional information about artifacts and archival material.

In addition to presenting the individual artifacts and archival material, the “Highlights” section of the website present curated selections of images and artifacts based on themes of Maritime History within the VMM’s collections.

Visitors to the website are able to register for an account and then assemble their own groupings of artifacts, archival material, and images to create mini exhibitions for themselves.

“We trust that this resource will create increased transparency for the institution” says Executive Director Dr. Joost Schokkenbroek. “It will create improved accessibility for researchers and people locally and internationally who have an interest in maritime history and maritime heritage. It blends in with the museum’s goal to connect more effectively with communities”

This new website is part of ongoing work by the VMM and staff to update and improve collections management and digitize its thousands of artifacts and archival items. It is a time consuming and expensive process, and the development of this website could not have been made possible without the support of grant funding received from the Department of Canadian Heritage.
