Hi Everyone,
I'm very pleased to announce that we will be hosting 4 tule mat-making
workshops at O'Keefe Ranch, in Vernon, BC. These workshops are FREE to
attend, and are open to all skill levels. Please note that in between
writing the below media release and sending it out this morning, the
November 14th session is already full. Register today by emailing
sqilxwwoman at gmail.com
Our media release:
Throughout this past summer, artist Mariel Belanger has been harvesting
tule reeds from Deep Creek at O’Keefe Ranch. It was important to focus on
the reeds still grow on-site, because this is where Belanger’s family
members lived and harvested more than 150 years ago.
Now, community members are invited to join Belanger and Elder artist Barb
Marchand to create tule-reed mats for a traditional Syilx home to be
installed at the Ranch – a reminder of the North Okanagan’s origins, as
well as the practises that are alive and well today.
The workshops take place in the Greenhow Museum at O’Keefe Ranch on
November 13—14 from 1-4pm, and on November 23-24, from 10 am–2 pm. The
hosts will provide tools, instruction, and light refreshments. People of
all skill-levels are welcome, and participation is free! Space is limited
to 10 participants per workshop, so register right away by emailing
sqilxwwoman at gmail.com to secure your spot!
