Hi All,

I know this is veering away from what the original poster asked, but following up on another poster: museums purchasing audio tour equipment to be used within an exhibition space (such as speakers, beacons or motion detectors triggers) could be an eligible project under the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund which can contribute up to half of eligible equipment costs.

Unfortunately, projects about developing historical walking tour apps or audio tour content in general is not eligible.

Let me know if you have questions.

Another group we have been working with is Neartuit<http://www.neartuit.com/>, based here in New Westminster. Their approach is to use Bluetooth beacons that are triggered through proximity. The approach has been quite effective in delivering highly localized content specifically aimed at drawing attention to characteristic features of a building or item we have on display in our galleries.

I am also very familiar with On This Spot through my co-op role at UVic – the owner is a graduate of UVic and has hired History students (graduate and undergraduate) to write some of their their walking tours. They do really interesting work and are currently expanding. Cheers, Allison

The fellows at On This Spot are very passionate about their product and work. I know at least one of them has a history/heritage background. I hear the interest in their app is growing quickly and widely.

Hi Tammy;

I don’t know much about On This Spot, but they were a sponsor for the 2019 Heritage BC conference in Nanaimo this year. It seemed that the owners understood history and it is a local company.

Hello, BC Museumland!

I have been investigating self-guided walking tour platforms for a tour of downtown Creston. I’m finding many options, ranging from really gimmicky to really expensive. We do have a small budget for subscription costs, but I’m looking for something sleek and professional on the much lower end of the pricing scale.

We want something that works with all the most popular operating systems and is available to users offline; easy to use for both us (me being pretty non-techy) and our visitors; GPS-enabled; must be able to handle maps, photos, text; audio and video capabilities are a bonus. But, from what I’m seeing, that describes most of the apps out there and I’m hoping somebody has some experience to help me narrow it down?

Thanks!

Tammy
