In 2010, the Kohl Children’s Museum in Chicago had an admission charge of $5 per adult, with children free. This was paid at the Admissions Desk in the Lobby. As one walked down the short hall into the museum innards, a not small but simple sign on an empty wall said, “It actually costs $8 per person to operate the Museum. Your donations will be much appreciated to help.” Below was a plexiglass Donation Box. Today the prices are higher, but the concept of communicating real operational values remains.

The TCHM has been admission by donation since we opened, $2 and kids in free. What we had on the sign, and what our gallery attendant says was "Admission by donation, suggested donation is $2-10" Some people still don't donate and that's fine. This year we hoped that our rising visitor numbers over the past few years meant we could up that donation to $5.
In the end we did and now it's suggested donation of $5-15. People with cash are still happy to donate but there are far fewer people carrying cash this year and we don't have a digital payment method. As a result our average donation is actually down from last year.

Atchelitz Threshermen’s Association Pioneer Museum in Chilliwack is re-opening for one day a week. For many years we have had a sign saying admission by donation. We are considering charging a minimal fee for entrance to our main building. Our numbers have been going up over the last few years and our donations have increased considerably, but we wonder if we are shortchanging ourselves by not charging.
Any ideas or opinions on this issue would be much appreciated.
