*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*
Continuous Journey: the documentary that was (almost) impossible to make
*A screening with award-winning filmmaker and Caetani Centre’s
Artist-In-Residence, Ali Kazimi*
*“This was a story I was told was impossible to make, because there was so
little visual material,”* shares Kazimi.
Creative people just don’t take no for an answer.
“*I had to come up with inventive ways of making it visually and
emotionally engaging. I used a handful of archival images in unexpected
ways."*
Kazimi, a 2019 laureate of the Governor General’s Award for lifetime
achievement in Visual and Media Arts, made the impossible possible, and on
Wednesday, February 12th, at 7pm, he’ll share his award winning, critically
acclaimed feature documentary in Vernon at the Caetani Centre.
*"I had photocopies of photographs or simple drawings. I embraced what I
had, literally every scrap of visual archives, or version of it, I could
lay my hands on,”* he continues.
*Continuous Journey* brings to light the little-known history of the
turning away of the passenger ship, the Komagata Maru, from Vancouver in
1914.
*“There were 376 would**-**be Punjabi immigrants from British India**. M**ost
of the passengers were not allowed to land** and** were forced to return,”*
said Kazimi.
Since its launch this landmark film has spurred academic research, and
inspired other artists and writers. In 2016, following the apology offered
by Prime Minister Trudeau in the House of Commons, excerpts from the film
were screened at the official reception.
Visually innovative, while drawing links between the past and the present,
the film offers a vital reflection on the history of race and immigration
in Canada.
Kazimi’s body of work spans a broad spectrum of genres and media, and
includes three feature documentaries (Narmada: A Valley Rises, Continuous
Journey, and Random Acts of Legacy), several short and mid-length
documentaries (including Shooting Indians and Runaway Grooms), experimental
films, and 3D media art installations.
Born and raised in India, Kazimi has lived in Toronto since 1983. He is an
Associate Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Arts, York
University where he has been teaching since 2006.
In 2019, the University of British Columbia conferred him with a honorary
Doctor of Letters degree.
There will be a unique opportunity to have a discussion with the filmmaker
following the film on Wednesday, February 12th, 7pm - 9pm.
Kazimi is in Vernon as the Caetani Cultural Centre’s Self-Directed
Artist-in-Residence. These programs are available to artists working on
creative projects anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months in length.
The artist stays and creates at the Caetani Cultural Centre and is invited
to share workshops, readings and exhibitions with the North Okanagan
community.
