Hello,
Here at the Vernon Museum and Archives we are on day 6 of our store room reorganization. We have a few treasures available for museum transfers:
Extra special offer: It's not every day that one of these hits the list serves! We have a full format studio camera with tripod and lens - Rodenstock Sironar - N 210mm f/1:56 s/n 9481543. 5X7 film back mounted on the camera. Comes with 4"X5" film back converter. For those of you saying "what?", it's a really big camera mounted on a stand! I'm told it took excellent portraits. It comes with film and 7 film canisters (2005.065.001-3)
For those of you tired of jingling as you walk, we have a coin sorting machine. It's a dull grey box with a handle on that side that you turn. You drop in your hard earned change in, twirl the handle, and the box sorts the coins. Coins may go the way of the travelers' check, so build up your collection today! It looks almost brand new! (2005.77.55)
A surveying rod from the early 1900s. Made of wood with the numbers brightly painted along one side. Show visitors how the streets they walked and the roads they drive were once measured out. (1991.065.001)
Still asking your visitors to write out their visitor comments by hand? Well now you can have them type it out! We have 3 typewriters available! Just tell me what you are looking for and I can arrange a typewriter adoption for you today! First person to respond has the option of also getting a metal typing table!
2 lacrosse sticks. Just the right size to encourage your visitors to run across the lawn and flick a ball at each other. (not accessioned)
A large and mysterious trunk that has definitely been to Hogwarts at least once. It's a massive beast, 88 inches wide, 44 inches deep, and 57 inches high. It's wood with metal trim and fittings, brown and black, with handles on either end. The top has some water damage and is discolored. Perfect for storing a cauldron and spell books. (997.78.1)
This grey wicker basket is cleverly made to resemble a bird's nest, as all the woven pieces are allowed to jut outward. It was made on the coast of BC as a work of art/souvenir. (2012.42.1)
FORE!!! We have two golf clubs! One which is described as a club wedge with a #5 metal head with a shaft wrapped in black perforated tape, and another a second club wedge, with a metal shaft & head, the handle wrapped in black perforated tape. Last but not least, the golf club bag they came in! Rather dirty. (2002.010.005 1, 5, 6)
Wooden toilet tank. It has a metal knob to flush with, and the bits that make the tank work are still in the tank. That's it. I'm not going to try to dress this up. Any niche toilet museums out there? (2016.24.4)
Flu season is upon us, just as it was upon our forefathers in 1955. Why not remember the sniffles of the past with this wooden bed tray? It's in mint condition, and made of that weird, soft, yet somehow rough wood that was so popular in the 50's (you know what I mean). You just unfold the legs, lay it over your lap and sip on some chicken noodle soup. (996.68.45)
Remember when you were a kid and you'd find a slightly curved stick and immediately scavenge up some thread and make a bow? We have just such a bow here. It's about a meter long, the wood is smoothed from use, and the string tied on with leather. An excellent reminder how some aspects of childhood never change.
There are some relics of the past so distinct, so quintessential, yet so very often we don't recognize them it until it's too late. This idea is beautifully demonstrated by our collection of self-improvement media. We have 8 books on cassettes and records made by eager sales men in the 60's and 70's, to help YOU have your best sales year ever. For example you can learn the "Magic Formula for Selling", "Sales Control Through the 'Xoces Process'" or my favorite, how to "Fly High". That last one comes with a fierce looking bald eagle on the cover. This collection was used by a local business man here in Vernon, but if the bios on these are to be believed these records taught millions to be better salesmen. (2019.029)
A prie dieu, or a personal prayer bench, complete with a place to kneel, and a desk to rest your hands on. The sides have a cross on them. Perfect for displays on churches or church communities, or when you are waiting for that funding to come through.
A gramophone, made in Canada by Viola. It's not in working condition, but maybe with a bit of love it might play again. Why else keep all those records if you don't have a record player? (2007.002.001)
Lastly, the original instant crock pot - a metal pressure cooker. Ours is made of aluminum, with black clamps around the edge and a pressure gauge. It's made by the National Aluminum Company. For some reason it has the word "Health" on the lid, which is rather reassuring.
I am happy to send photographs or more information, but as usual, shipping costs will be your museums responsibility, and in some cases there will be an extra fee for shipping materials. If you are interested please contact: Carolyn.ben at vernonmuseum.ca<mailto:Carolyn.ben at vernonmuseum.ca>
