Hello Jocelyn,
I am the President of the Mill Bay/Malahat Historical Society and run the Heritage Museum in Mill Bay on Vancouver Island.
I wanted to share our Mannequin story with you as we have used ‘figures’ for years and they really add life to our displays.
Five years ago we hosted a community event called ‘The Good Old Daze, Scarecrow Festival’. Dozens of community groups of all ages plus local businesses made figures that connected them to history. We stressed these had to be handcrafted so we didn’t have any store mannequins. They paid an entrance fee so it was a fund raiser for us.
For example Thrifty’s figure showed the history of Coke Cola and egg raising in the past. The Girl Guides did Girl Guide cookie history and I have attached a figure showing an early gas pump. Each figure had to have a short page of information. We were amazed at how much history information we were able to pass on to the public in a fun way.
We had nearly 100 figures displayed in our local mall and the public could vote on their favourite, we had over 25,000 votes. At our final day BBQ we awarded prizes for the winning figures.
Jump ahead to last year when we opened our museum. We decided to use some of these figures to add a little humour to our exhibits and due to Covid we can’t hold The Good Old Daze event so we could adapt the figures to what we needed. I have attached some pictures of the figures, the second to last is in our museum.
If you would like more information please contact me.

Good day museum friends!
We are trying to add some "life" to our museum as well as showcase some traditional clothing and are reaching out to see if anyone in this network has any mannequins collecting dust, or if you have any tips on places to contact that may.
Thanks so much have a great day.
