*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vancouver Maritime Museum to re-open on June 11,
2020.*
The Vancouver Maritime Museum is excited to announce that we will open our
doors to the public on Thursday, June 11, 2020. On the same day, our
neighbours at the Museum of Vancouver will open their doors as well. The
Vancouver Maritime Museum has taken a measured approach to re-opening,
giving careful consideration to the safety of staff and visitors.
*“I am truly delighted that after an almost three-month closure, we can
re-open the Vancouver Maritime Museum to our cherished audiences. We have a
strong social responsibility – to close the museum to help prevent the
coronavirus from spreading and to re-open this great place for people who
wish to get out of the house and feel safe whilst enjoying culture. After
all, the museum should be an inspirational meeting place*.” – Joost
Schokkenbroek, PhD, Executive Director
As of June 11, the Vancouver Maritime Museum will be open Thursdays to
Sundays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Safety measures include contactless
ticket sales, social distancing on site and new cleaning protocols.
*“The health and safety of our visitors and staff is our top priority. The
museum is implementing new guidelines to provide a safe and welcoming
environment. Some of these measures include enhanced cleaning procedures,
directional flow through the galleries to encourage social distancing
and plexiglass barriers to limit contact between staff and visitors.*” –
Nicola Clur, Assistant Director of Operations
The museum is re-opening with a new exhibition, *By the Shore: Maritime
B.C. in Paintings*. Curated by Duncan MacLeod, the exhibition features
paintings by Emily Carr, E.J. Hughes, Harry Heine and more. *By the Shore*
will provide locals with an opportunity to enjoy seaside British Columbia
while staying close to home.
We will continue to serve those who are unable to visit the museum with
#VirtualVMM, a program of online events and resources that allows patrons
to engage with the museum from the safety of their homes.
The museum is also providing a free exhibition for the public to enjoy
outdoors. *Lessons from the Arctic: How Roald Amundsen Won the Race to the
South Pole*, sponsored by the Norwegian Embassy, is on display in the
windows of the *St. Roch* shelter where the public can view it without
entering the building.
*“This exhibition is a fitting offering for our times as it examines the
isolated life of the great Norwegian explorer in the unforgiving polar
regions.” *– Joost Schokkenbroek, Executive Director
