Canada Summer Job Position
Curatorial Assistant
$18/ hour 240 hour contract
(Part-time work July - November, 2020)
The Curatorial Assistant position is an engaging entry-level position within the programming department of a contemporary art gallery. The Assistant will work with the Curator and other Gallery staff providing support in the following areas: the Gallery’s Permanent Collection, social media, and exhibition and public programming. Ability to communicate in Mandarin or Cantonese is considered an asset for this position.
Key work activities:
● Assisting in maintaining and updating Richmond Art Gallery’s collection database and hardcopy records including accession registers, donor files, artwork loans.
● Providing assistance for upcoming 2020 - 2021 exhibitions -including research and promotion.
● Providing administrative support for exhibition programming including completion of condition reports; organizing and maintaining artist images and files, and publications database.
● Providing administrative support in updating information on website and generating social media content - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WeChat.
● Assisting in the production of didactic materials for exhibitions, including the translation of text into Mandarin and Cantonese.
● Providing support in daily gallery operations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or post-graduate program focused on museum studies, art history, or studio arts. Experience working in a gallery setting is an asset.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
● Mandarin and/or Cantonese language skills.
● Interest in contemporary art.
● Interest in curatorial practice.
● Interest or experience in public programming or facilitation.
● Knowledge of the Curatorial profession, institutions and sites in Canada.
● Skill and ability to use a related database program management.
● Ability to work both independently and interdependently while exercising sound judgement and initiative.
● Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with both internal staff and external clients/customers.
● Ability to courteously and effectively deal with the public in providing information and assistance regarding exhibitions and collections.
● Ability to follow direction and meet established deadlines.
● Ability to successfully pass a Criminal Record Check.
