Art camps back for summer at Kelowna Art Gallery

June 9, 2020 - Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery has re-opened its doors and is inviting children to choose their own "Art Adventure" this summer.

The return of their popular Art Adventures summer camps is welcome news and now they come in two exciting options. An at home version of their weekday camps is scheduled for children ages 6 to 10, beginning July 6 until July 31, 2020. For the month of August, half-day camps will be held at the Gallery for children ages 3 to 12. They run from August 4 through August 28.

No matter which option you choose, children can expect to explore a variety of drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, and sculpture activities inspired by the current exhibitions on view at the Gallery. The new at home camps provide self-guided activities, with additional remote support, and culminate in a fun digital show and tell to cap off the week.

All camps will be led by two experienced and talented local university students.

Senam Tsikata is currently a student in the Bachelor of Arts program at UBC Okanagan. "I am very excited to work with the Kelowna Art Gallery this summer and bring the beauty of arts to kids of all ages. I can't wait to teach them to express themselves with a variety of art techniques."

Abigail Wiens is a current student at UBC Okanagan pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree with a minor in visual art. "I am happy to be back for Art Adventures once again this summer, and to bring the wonder of art to the kids in our community. Even though this year looks different from the last, art is what brings people together, and I am thrilled to be able to teach kids about art and creativity."

Class sizes for all the Gallery's camps are limited, which allows for individual instruction and enriches the experience for all participants. In person camps adhere to current provincial health guidelines and are limited to eight participants to ensure safe social distancing practices are followed.

"Our camps provide a fun and engaging opportunity for children to learn about and create art," says Ryan Trafananko, the Gallery's Education Coordinator who oversees the camps. "This summer is especially unique, and we have worked hard to create exciting programs that continue to encourage creativity and imagination."

The cost for a week of at home camps is $100.00, or $80.00 for members. The cost for a week of half day in person camps at the Gallery is $120.00, or $96.00 for members.
