[BCMA] Museum Quiet Spaces Study Seeking Participants

Hi Andrea - what a great topic to focus on.  While I’m not a museum educator or positioned to contribute to your study, I thought I’d mention one of the most memorable  quiet spaces I’ve encountered in a museum. It’s the final space called the Hall of Remembrance in the self-guided walk through the US Holocaust Memorial Museum  https://www.ushmm.org/information/about-the-museum/architecture-and-art/hall-of-remembrance <https://www.ushmm.org/information/about-the-museum/architecture-and-art/hall-of-remembrance> .  A large quiet area with seating around the edges - and beautiful lighting. Where black and white predominate in the exhibits, the Hall is infused with golden lighting through windows and sky-lights.  Or at least that’s how I remember it.  I recall it as a deliberate and welcome space for contemplation and for decompression after a difficult experience.  Hope this is helpful. I am currently conducting my graduate research in fulfillment of the UBC Master of Museum Education program on museum educators’ and visitors’ perceptions of designated museum quiet spaces in Canada. The goal of this research to understand through interviews more about peoples’ opinions of quiet spaces with the intention that findings could inform the creation and facilitation of quiet spaces.

If this research topic is of interest to you, I would appreciate your help with the following:

-       You are invited to participate in the research study from the point of view of a museum educator. You do not need to have previously used or seen a museum quiet space to participate. More information can be found on the attached poster.

-       Please feel free to forward this invitation within your networks to other museum educators who might be interested.

-       Would you be willing to share this study information with any museum visitors you have connections to? This could be through sending the “Museum Quiet Spaces Poster” or “Museum Quiet Spaces Facebook or E-Newsletter Poster.doc” attached to this email through an e-newsletter to visitors/members or a post on Facebook. Or it could be sharing this invitation via email or in-person to visitors you have more direct connections with.

The study will consist of an interview lasting about 45 minutes, which will take place using Zoom web conferencing software or over the phone.
