Teen art workshop series offered at Kelowna Art Gallery

June 17, 2020 - Kelowna, BC: A dynamic series of art classes geared specifically for teens returns to the Kelowna Art Gallery this summer.

The Teen Friday Art Series will run every Friday, from 1 to 4 pm, beginning July 31 and through to August 28.

During the classes, participants can expect to develop skills in drawing, watercolours, mixed media, graphic novel design, and more, while being inspired by the current exhibitions on view at the Gallery. Classes highlight skill-building and self-expression, as well as the introduction of new ideas and artistic techniques. The series is open to absolute beginners, in addition to those of intermediate skill level.

Our featured instructor this summer is local artist Jim Elwood. Elwood is an accomplished artist in a variety of media, notably drawing, watercolour, and block printing. He is a graduate with honours from the University of Victoria, and has attended the Banff Centre's studio program, as well as the University of Calgary's Art Education program. Elwood's time is divided among working as an artist, an illustrator, and as an art teacher at Mount Boucherie Secondary School.

Jim Elwood will also be leading our popular week-long Teen Art Camp that runs August 10 to August 14, from 1 pm to 4 pm each day.

Class sizes for all the Gallery's camps are limited, which allows for individual instruction and enriches the experience for all participants. In person camps adhere to current provincial health guidelines and are limited to eight participants to ensure safe physical distancing practices are followed.

"Our teen camps provide an opportunity for youth in the community to explore their creativity with specialized instruction and one-on-one creative guidance," says Victoria Verge, the Gallery's Education Coordinator of Adult Programming. "Having a passion for the arts in your teenage years can often develop into a lifelong pursuit and we are excited to foster that engagement in the art world through our ongoing programming."

Registration is now underway. The cost for each Teen Friday class is $55, or $44 for Gallery members. Fees for the week-long Teen Art Week are $200, or $160 for members.
