Greetings,
There seems to be so much going on these days, it is sometimes difficult to
keep up with all the news and information that is circulating. To make sure
you haven’t missed anything, I wanted to provide a quick summary.
- As you know, BC has entered Phase 2 of the pandemic recovery plan. We
have put together some resources to help you with your re-opening planning.
(information and links below)
- We have announced two free webinars. “*What is ‘good’ conservation?”* is
based on a day-long discussion that had been planned for the conference.
Because of the tremendous response to the mapping webinar, we have arranged
with On This Spot to offer a new webinar: “*Heritage and the Virtual
World: Strategies to Engage Audiences”**. Information for these two
webinars is below; our complete calendar of webinars is found here
<https://heritagebc.ca/learning-centre/upcoming-webinars/>. *
- *We have also had a terrific response to the #shovelreadyheritage
campaign (more than **$60M **in projects so far!) and the “falling
through the gaps” campaign. We already have delivered numerous reports to
the province. It is critical you submit your information as soon as
possible. See below for details. *
Don’t forget, Canadian Heritage will announce the second phase of the $500M
emergency fund program in the next week or two. We will keep you posted
when an update is available.
Take care. Paul

*Webinars *
*What is ‘good’ conservation?*
Wednesday, June 3 at 1:00pm. Register here

.
We may know what we want, but it is so difficult to achieve. With
innumerable influences and interpretations, ‘good’ conservation can be
elusive. But what is ‘good’ conservation? And who gets to say what is good
and not? What is the balance between the ideal and the reality of heritage
conservation and development?
We have invited several heritage professionals to start the conversation by
offering their key responses to our leading question: What is ‘good’
conservation? We will then open the conversation as we challenge ourselves
to answer this thorny question.
*Heritage and the Virtual World: Strategies to Engage Audiences*
Friday, July 10 at noon. Register here

.
COVID-19 has closed the doors of many museums and heritage sites and
cancelled in-person events such as tours. As a result, our sector has had
to move programming online to continue to reach audiences. In this
informational webinar, we are partnering with On This Spot to explore
strategies for continuing to engage and attract audiences in the virtual
world.

Falling Through the Gaps?
If you feel your organization is falling through the gaps of the various
emergency funding programs, please let us know about your situation.
- What is your current situation?
- Why have you been ineligible to access emergency funding (in
particular through BC Arts Council, Canada Council, Canadian Heritage, and
other similar funding agencies)?
- What are the foreseeable or anticipated consequences?
Tell us your story
<pgravett at heritagebc.ca?subject=Falling%20through%20the%20gaps>.
*#ShovelReadyHeritage*
It is now time to make our case to show stimulus funding will unlock
billions of dollars in capital construction and other investments at
older/heritage buildings. Government investments will capitalize
on shovel-ready projects, create new green jobs, spur private investment,
and contribute to community resiliency over the long term.
Your voice is needed to help us with this ‘ask’ and we are looking for
projects in two categories:
- Construction projects at older and heritage places – repair,
additions, retrofit, emergency stabilization work – that is ready to go to
tender or ready to start work
- Planning and design work for heritage construction projects (the goal
of this work would be to create immediate jobs in the planning and design
fields, and future construction work with more jobs within the coming year.
Please fill out this form

to
describe projects you believe are shovel ready (as you would describe the
term).
NOTE: the information you provide will be used to make a case for funding
supports for the arts, culture and heritage sectors. You are NOT applying
for funding but, with your help, we hope to encourage provincial and
federal governments to establish additional funding programs.

As an organization of provincial scope, Heritage BC recognizes that its
members, and the local history and heritage they seek to preserve, occupy
the lands and territories of B.C.’s Indigenous peoples. Heritage BC asks
its members to reflect on the places where they reside and work, and to
respect the diversity of cultures and experiences that form the richness of
our provincial heritage.
