Auxiliary (limited-term, part-time)
The Museum of North Vancouver (MONOVA) is expanding its museum theatre program, Waterfront Productions, to be year-round as it prepares to open its new Museum in 2021. The Museum Theatre Programs Intern will research, perform, and adapt scripts about North Vancouver’s the history of North Vancouver’s streetcar, shipbuilding heritage, mountaineering culture to the area’s residents and visitors. This will build upon previous successful initiatives using theatrical interpretation and animation to bring North Vancouver’s stories to life in a socially relevant, engaging, and reflective way. As well, casual interpretation programs will be presented to families following current health and safety guidelines. The Interpreter will also work with MONOVA staff hire additional Museum Theatre staff and to develop a community program for youth to empower them to create and perform their own works. The Museum Theatre Programmer will gain experience as an actor, a heritage interpreter, in stage management and program coordination, and in program development and delivery. They will be supervised by MONOVA staff and will be mentored by a museum theatre professional.
Specific Duties:
* Work with the Theatre Director and other MONOVA staff, to learn the practice of museum theatre and other forms of heritage and cultural interpretation.
* Memorize, rehearse and present “The Story-filled Streetcar Ride” museum theatre piece following covid-safety protocols in the new Museum of North Vancouver for special interest groups and the public.
* Converse with visitors and facilitate dialogue between them on relevant topics, interpret Streetcar #153, and facilitate covid-safe visitor explorations of Streetcar #153.
* Work with Education staff on planning and coordinating the launch and weekly performances of the “The Story-filled Streetcar Ride.”
* Work with the Theatre Director on adjusting other museum theatre scripts for safe performance during the covid-19 pandemic.
* Reflect on learning and work with MONOVA staff to plan, coordinate, and deliver a program to empower youth to create and perform their own museum theatre pieces.
* Review research materials on relevant subjects (shipyards, streetcars, mountains)
* Take part in the hiring process of an additional actor to perform the “The Story-filled Streetcar Ride.”
* Compile show reports and a reference binder of their activities for use by future theatrical interpreters.
* Compile statistics and process feedback/response mechanisms.
* Demonstrate enthusiastic interest and appreciation of North Vancouver history.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge:
* Diploma or undergraduate degree/certificate in areas of acting, theatre, performance, museum education, cultural resource management, or public programming. Additional coursework in history, education, Indigenous studies, or other related subjects are an asset.
* A strong interest in interactive theatre, museum theatre, public programing, or public engagement.
* Experience presenting and performing before live audiences.
* Fluent in English; able to understand and interact with the public; some knowledge of French or other additional languages are an asset.
* Experience researching, writing, and organizing presentations for a variety of audiences.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Demonstrated ability to positively represent a public organization to the community;
* Willingness to contribute to discussions and able to accept feedback and apply it.
* Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service.
* Energetic, outgoing, open-minded, empathetic, and flexible personality and creativity.
* Ability to lift 30 lbs. (14kg).
* Good computer skills (keyboarding & social media.
* Valid clean BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence and Criminal Record Check.
* Strong organizational and communication skills.
Wage: $20.89 plus statutory holidays and vacation pay
Work week: 30 hrs/week (4 x 7.5 hr days)
Term: 23 November 2020 to 31 March 2021 (17 work weeks, with 1 week shut down over Christmas)
Work Sites: North Vancouver Museum (115 W Esplanade, North Vancouver) and Community History Centre (3203 Institute Road)

This position is funded in part via Young Canada Works in Heritage Institutions Internships for Graduates program of the Department of Canadian Heritage, administered through the Canadian Museums Association. Position is subject to receipt of funding. Candidates must be registered on the Young Canada Works website and meet all eligibility criteria to be considered for this position:
• are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada; Note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.
• are legally entitled to work in Canada;
• will be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
• will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW;
• are an unemployed or underemployed college or university graduate, that is, not employed full-time;
• are a recent graduate who has graduated from college or university
• are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with YCW;
• have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.
