The 2020 Provincial Election is a critical opportunity to tell the story of
the impact of our sector and to urge government to take action to ensure
museums, galleries, and cultural centres can continue to support their
communities. To support members in their advocacy efforts, the BCMA,
together with its Advocacy Committee and its partners, has prepared a
number of new advocacy resources.
*New 2020 Provincial Election Resources:*
- Election Primer 2020 – Making the Case for Museums, Galleries, and
Cultural Centres in Your Community

- Advocacy Resources

- Local Newspaper Op-Ed Template
<http://museumsassn.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/2020Election-OpEd-Template.docx>
- The BCMA and Heritage BC will be sending this Op-Ed to our media
contacts, but we encourage members to adapt this template, adding a quote
about the impact COVID-19 on your community’s heritage and adding a
picture, and submitting to your local press. By sharing this Op-Ed with
your local media, you will help magnify the impact and help us
get out the
message that community and government support is critical for
the heritage
sector’s recovery.
*Sector Partner Advocacy Resources:*
- 2020 Arts and Culture Advocacy Email Template
<https://artsvotebc.good.do/election2020/email/>
- ArtsVote BC <http://www.artsvotebc.ca/>
- Heritage BC Webinar: Advocacy and Politicians
<https://heritagebc.ca/heritage-bc-webinar-advocacy-and-politicians/> (free
registration for BCMA members)
*We encourage members to review changes to the Lobbyist Transparency Act
<https://www.lobbyistsregistrar.bc.ca/lobbyists-transparency-act/> before
engaging in any provincial advocacy activities.* Since the 2017 provincial
election, new regulations have been established to increase transparency
with respect to who is lobbying the BC government. Pacific Legal Education
& Outreach Society has a free webinar recording
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLkkXkrqMwA> that outlines these changes.
We encourage members to review these changes before engaging in advocacy
work, especially if you are engaging in advocacy as a paid staff person,
representing your organization.
Lastly, the provincial election is October 24th – make sure to vote and
ensure that our sector’s voice is heard!
