Hello Abby Judkins;
In 2014, our Museum received a proposal for a "Horses" exhibition from a British Columbia Author - Margaret Evans that referred to Ancient Horses in North America and provided a reference a horse skull being found in Southern Alberta that was dated to having lived there over 11,300 years ago. She has written on the subject of these horses and has done related presentations.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [BCMA] Historic Horse Samples
Hi all,
My name is Abby Judkins and I am a graduate student at the University of New Mexico. I am working on a project looking at the spread of the domesticated horse in western North American with several professors, including Drs. Emily Jones and Will Taylor. I am trying to locate archaeological or natural history collections associated with late prehistoric/protohistoric contexts that contain horse skeletal material. We are looking at the idea of Spanish horses that are found in Indigenous sites that date before sustained interaction, including the idea that some of these horses may have been mislabeled as Pleistocene species. Some recent work by Drs. Jones and Taylor found some horses that are from late prehistoric/protohistoric contexts that were attributed to the Pleistocene species but with radiocarbon dating found them to date after 1650. If any of you have any collections that may include horses that fit these criteria or have any ideas about people or places I reach out to, would you be willing to share this information with me? If you have any questions about the project and would like to discuss it in more depth, please let me know. I appreciate you taking the time.
Thank you,
Abby Judkins
