Hi all,
In recent years, the Japanese Canadian community has compiled an artist directory of past and current artists who self identify as part of the Japanese Canadian community. The directory has been built on the foundation of a former print directory, Japanese Canadians in the Arts: A Directory of Professionals compiled and edited by Aiko Suzuki in 1994.

I am curious about the VAG database - didn't know about it and yes, it is a valuable resource. Does it get promoted to the artist community often? Do artists apply to it?
>From my brief look, it seems to only document artists who have had a publication made about an exhibition. And these days, with the cost of printing...that excludes a lot of artists who show at smaller galleries or artist-run centres or pop-up galleries. Or am I wrong...is there another way the data is collected for the VAG database?
I am especially curious as to my surprise, I found myself on the list with very old and limited info on my work. How do artists update the information?
Thanks for both Pentiction & Vancouver Art Galleries for providing this service!

Thanks Roger,
Thank you for your question. I have long enjoyed, used and admired Gary’s incredible database for many years, long before it was made available free online. That being said Gary’s primary focus has been documenting the historic record and this has proven to be an invaluable resource and we are certainly not looking to compete with this in any way. Our interest is documenting the artists living and working today and the information we gather is populated by the artists themselves. As a researcher its incredible just how ephemeral information has become and we are hoping that this will serve as a resource for future historians to find at least some information on the artists currently working in BC today. It’s incredible how quickly we can lose information today and as more and more people only create digital content rather than printed material , the simple failure to pay for your domain will result in your life’s work being lost forever. I can’t tell you how many times I have chased down old links, to only discover that they are dead, in the futile hope of finding any info from which I might be able to build on or at least give context to their life and work. It has also long bothered me that we that we don’t make better use of the incredible amount of information we acquire each year on artists living and working in BC and we hope that will allow us to not only record it better but also make it accessed well into the future. In summation the motivation comes from the fact that I have found it far easier to do research on artists who lived and worked in the last century than it is to research artists whose career has taken place primarily in the digital age.
I hope that this is not seen in competition but rather as a complement to the amazing work done by Gary Sim and its certainly not intended to be a comprehensive survey. We hope that at the very least it will become a valuable additional resource for scholars and the public alike in the years to come.
I hope that this will alleviate any misunderstandings or concerns you may have regarding our motivations and we are happy to share our information with any and all who are interested. At the end of the day it’s all about getting people interested, involved and engaged in the visual arts and ultimately igniting a passion for our rich and dynamic art history.
Please feel free to contact me directly at the Penticton Art Gallery if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Yours,

Why duplicate what has already been done over the years at considerable effort?
How will this differ from the databse that Gary Sim has put together over the year and which is now available at the Vancouver Art Gallery?

Calling all contemporary artists who have lived or are currently living and working in British Columbia we would love for you add your information to our new BC artist database!
Happy New Year to you all ... This year the Penticton Art Gallery's resolution is to profile the work of as many artists as we are able and to compile an extensive list of contemporary artists who have a connection with or are currently living and practicing in British Columbia, in any medium. The idea behind this is to act as a launching pad for art historians, collectors, and other artists to learn more about your work and to reach out and connect with you. The database will be permanently available on our website for everyone to explore
If you are interested in being included as part of this resource please fill out our online form at the link below ...
Thank you for your time and consideration.
