Nanaimo Art Gallery:
Located in the heart of Nanaimo, on the lands of the Snuneymuxw, Nanaimo
Art Gallery is an ambitious public art museum that inspires and engages its
communities through art.
Over the past several years, the Gallery has moved through a phase of
significant transformation to reposition itself in the communities we serve
and to enhance our capacity. We have re-imagined and enriched our
integrated exhibition and education programs, created new partnerships, and
strengthened our relationships with artists and audiences. We are a trusted
organization with a growing reputation.
Unique in our region, we are creating new understandings of the potential
of contemporary art. An inquiry-based approach infuses and connects all
Gallery activities and a small, dedicated team of staff, board and
volunteers offers a program that is rooted in our unique regional context
and resonates with audiences, globally.
About Nanaimo:
The city of Nanaimo is on Snuneymuxw territory. This classic West
Coast community,
offers natural beauty at every turn, and vast recreation potential. Nanaimo
has one of the longest shorelines in Canada, and a forested mountain
backdrop just outside downtown. Here, you can go from the wilderness to the
city centre in just a few minutes, and spend more time in the places you
want to be.Nanaimo, BC is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island,
113 km north of Victoria, and 55 km across the Strait of Georgia from
Vancouver. The city projects out into the strait like a headland, affording
waterfront on three sides and spectacular ocean views at every turn. The
local landscape is defined by Mount Benson, which rises 1,006 metres (3,300
feet) just west of Nanaimo, and the Nanaimo River estuary, the largest
estuary on Vancouver Island, which flows into Nanaimo Harbour at the south
end of the city.https://www.snuneymuxw.ca/nation/territory
