12.0pt'>“Land of Thundering Snow – Snow Research and Avalanche
Safety in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Canada</st1:place></st1:country-region>.” <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

style='font-size:12.0pt;font-style:italic'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></i></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><i><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span
style='font-size:12.0pt;font-style:italic'>Land of Thundering Snow</span></font></i>
is a unique, comprehensive resource giving the user unprecedented ‘behind
the scenes’ access to material not generally accessible to the public. It
features the latest information on avalanche science and safety; avalanche
control; the anatomy of an avalanche; staying safe in avalanche country; and
the ecology of avalanches. <o:p></o:p></p>

12.0pt'>The historical component of the exhibit is vast in terms of time and
space. For example, very few people realize that serious avalanche studies
started in <st1:country-region w:st="on">Canada</st1:country-region> as early
as 1885 with the construction the Canadian Pacific Railway through <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Rogers</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Pass</st1:PlaceName>,
or that there are records of a snow avalanche destroying a First Nations
village near <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Nain</st1:City>, <st1:State
w:st="on">Newfoundland</st1:State></st1:place> in 1782 <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

Exhibits Investment Program, Virtual Museum of Canada. The Virtual Museum of
Canada was formally under the management of the Canadian Heritage Information
Network, and is now managed by the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Canadian</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Museum</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> of History, still
with the financial support of the Government of Canada.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

and Archives on the same day. The museum exhibit will share elements of the
online version and will showcase present artifacts relating to avalanche safety
and research. We are anticipating that the museum exhibit will be available as
