immigrant communities, the Jewish community made its first home in the working class neighbourhood of Strathcona. Many early pioneers ran businesses in the busy hub of Gastown, while others set out each morning into the farmlands of Richmond and East Vancouver
as scrap collectors in the days before garbage trucks and blue bins. Before long, the community built its first synagogue, and established schools and social service organizations.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

past the edge of town, the city’s cemetery was opened in 1887. Five years later, a small section was consecrated as a Jewish burial ground and the first coffin was laid to rest. In time, over 450 members of our community were buried at Mountain View Cemetery.
