Revelstoke Museum & Archives is hosting “Revelstoke Revisited,”
the annual conference of the British Columbia Historical Federation and has
planned an agenda that is sure to satisfy the craving for knowledge of history
enthusiasts from throughout the province. Registration is open until Thursday,

12.0pt'>The first event of the conference is a free presentation by author
Ralph Beaumont, who recently published “Heckman’s Canadian Pacific
– His Photographic Journeys”, a beautiful book that showcases the
work of Joseph W. Heckman, a Canadian Pacific corporate photographer who took
more than 4,000 photographs of the CPR operations nationwide bethween 1898 to
1915. The presentation will take place at Revelstoke Railway Museum 719 Track
Street, at 2 pm on Thursday, May 26 and it is open to everyone, whether or not
they are registered for the conference.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

12.0pt'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><st1:PlaceName w:st="on"><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span

w:st="on">Museum</st1:PlaceType> and Archives is hosting the opening reception
on Thursday evening and participants will see the stunning recent exhibits,
including <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Land</st1:PlaceType> of
<st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Thundering Snow</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>, First
Tracks, and Sinixt – People of the Bull Trout. Vocalist Jacolyn Daniluck
and pianist Lyda Carey will take you back to the age of the crooners, and Gray
Monk Winery will provide a taste of the Okanagan. Appetizers will be provided
by the popular restaurant La Baguette. <o:p></o:p></p>

The keynote address of the conference will be delivered at Revelstoke’s
beautiful Performing Arts Centre on the morning of May 27. Noted B.C. scientist
Dr. John Woods will present the stories that he uncovered as head researcher
and writer for <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Land</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Thundering Snow</st1:PlaceName>, a website on the Virtual Museum of
Canada that was created by <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Revelstoke</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Museum</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> and Archives and
partners. The fascinating subject of avalanches and snow science in <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Canada</st1:country-region></st1:place>
will be presented by Dr. Woods with illustrations and examples from the
website. Viewers will never underestimate the power of an avalanche after
seeing this presentation. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Land</st1:PlaceType>
of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Thundering Snow</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> is a
recent recipient of the 2016 Award of Outstanding Achievement from the Canadian
Museums Association.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

lively talk on “The Romance of the <st1:place w:st="on">Big Bend</st1:place>,”
weaving tales of tragedy, triumph, and encounters with the wild in the
mineral-rich area north of Revelstoke. Ms. English will also introduce
participants to Revelstoke’s incredible ski history.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

12.0pt'>Conference delegates will have the opportunity to see
Revelstoke’s history up close and personal with a choice of four tours on
the afternoon of May 27. Tour options include a bus tour to Rogers Pass
National Historic site in <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Glacier</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">National Park</st1:PlaceType>; a bus tour to Revelstoke Dam, <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">B.C.</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Interior</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Forestry</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Museum</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>,
and Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre; a walking tour of the Revelstoke River
Trail; and a walking tour of Revelstoke’s historic downtown. On Saturday
afternoon, May 28, all of the delegates will have the opportunity to visit the
historic Nels Nelsen ski area on <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Mount</st1:PlaceType>
<st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Revelstoke</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> and put
themselves in the shoes, or should we say, skis, of the world-class ski jumpers
who once sought fame on the hill. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

Begbie Brewing Company and rollicking Revelstoke entertainment from local

The conference weekend will culminate in a sumptuous banquet at Revelation

workshop, “Getting Ready for the new Societies Act,” will be held
on Thursday, May 26 at 3:00 pm at the Revelstoke Seniors Centre. The Societies
Act is new legislation that was passed in spring 2015 and will come into effect
on November 28, 2016. It governs how societies (not-for-profit corporations)
are created and run in B.C. and includes significant updates to allow for more
flexibility in how societies operate, while still protecting the public
interest. Join Debbie Turner, Deputy Registrar at Registries and Online
Services, as she presents information on the new Societies Act and what
societies will need to do to get ready for the new Act. Debbie is joined by
Jill Sinkwich, a Director at the Ministry of Finance, who helped develop the
legislation. This free presentation will be of interest to anyone involved in a
registered B.C. Society.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
