<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="arial, helvetica, sans-serif">On Tuesday, July
12<sup>th</sup> at 9:00AM, the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan and UBC
Okanagan’s Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies will welcome blind social
practice artist Carmen Papalia for a nonvisual walking tour at the Rotary
Centre for the Arts. <span style="background-image:initial;background-repeat:initial">This experience is designed
to allow participants an opportunity to recognize and interpret urban and rural
areas from a different artistic perspective; Papalia’s works invites
participants to consider a world without sight. Papalia’s <i>Blind Field Shuttles</i> have been featured as part of exhibitions at
various art galleries and museums, including The Whitney Museum of American
Art, the L.A. Craft and Folk Art Museum, and the Vancouver Art Gallery. </span></font></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="background-image:initial;background-repeat:initial"><font face="arial, helvetica, sans-serif"><br></font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="arial, helvetica, sans-serif"><span style="background-image:initial;background-repeat:initial">The tour will be guided by the non-sighted Papalia in which participants
will shut their eyes, link arms, and follow Papalia for the entire hour-long
experience. </span><span style="line-height:115%;background-image:initial;background-repeat:initial">After using their non-visual senses
for a prolonged amount of time, participants will begin to recognize sight as
just one of <i>many</i> ways to engage with
and interpret a place.</span></font></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height:115%;background-image:initial;background-repeat:initial"><font face="arial, helvetica, sans-serif"><br></font></span></p>

Practice artist who makes participatory projects on the topic of access as it
relates to public space, the Art institution and visual culture. His work has
been featured as part of exhibitions and programming at: The Whitney Museum of
American Art, the L.A Craft and Folk Art Museum, the Grand Central Art Center,
the Canter Fitzgerald Gallery at Haverford College, the Portland Art Museum,
the Columbus Museum of Art and the Vancouver Art Gallery.</font></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="background-image:initial;background-repeat:initial"><font face="arial, helvetica, sans-serif"><br></font></span></p>
