RESILIENCE OF THE PEOPLE: A VISUAL HISTORY OF THE TRADITIONAL TERRITORY OF THE LEKWUNGEN/SONGHEES PEOPLE</strong><br>

July 6, 2016, Victoria, BC - In 1916 an English photographer by the name of Alice Lisle took photographs of First Nation entrepreneurs and residents around the harbour of Victoria. For 100 years the photos of were kept in storage until 2015, when they were
gifted to the Chief and Council of the Songhees Nation. In 2016, the Songhees Nation and Robert Bateman Centre worked together to incorporate these rare photographs in a new exhibit called
<em>Resilience of the People: A Visual History of the Traditional Territory of the Lekwungen/Songhees People</em>. <br>
<br>
This unique and exciting exhibit is celebrated on June 14th at a special open house at the Robert Bateman Centre. The exhibit covers a visual history of what is now Greater Victoria, the Songhees First Nation’s traditional territory. Visitors will discover
the complexities of the lands around them, and witness how the Songhees’ resilient relationship to the conditions of their ancestral lands has changed, including how their relationship has developed up to the present day. <br>
<br>
The project is also an important testament to the changing relationship between the original and new settlers of this area. “We are proud to partner with the Songhees Nation on this important exhibit” says Peter Ord, Managing Director of the Robert Bateman
Centre “especially now that governments and community leaders are working towards reconciliation with respect to First Nation communities.”<br>
<br>
The exhibit contains engaging maps, drawings, and artifacts, in addition to historical and contemporary photographs of the Songhees people. “They [the elders] held onto so much, with all the roadblocks they faced, and kept passing the culture along, being
so resilient. That’s a word, resilience, for our community – for First Nations” says Songhees elected councillor Karen Tunkara Dick.<br>

Please join the Robert Bateman Centre for a celebration of this new exhibit on Thursday, July 14th, 2016 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the Bateman Gallery at Victoria’s famous Steamship Terminal (2nd flr, 470 Belleville St). Admission is by donation. Special
guests, singers, and dancers from the Songhees Nation will be present to celebrate the exhibit. Aboriginal inspired cuisine and beverages will also be offered.<br>

This exhibit is open daily until September 30th, 2016. The Centre is open from 10am to 5pm and until 7pm on Friday and Saturday. Regular admission rates apply.<br>
