Job description:

The permanent collection in the museum and archives at RRU largely represent the recent historical epochs of Hatley Park National Historic Site. Artefacts are mainly related to the original owners of Hatley Castle: the Dunsmuirs (1908-1939),
the Royal Roads Military College (1940-1995), and Royal Roads University (1995-present). Many objects are original to the site and are unique historical artefacts.

The intern will first conduct a general inventory of the permanent collection, gaining contextual understanding of the collection while identifying any immediate conservation needs. After the intern has a clear concept of the material,
they will conduct a detailed description of each of the artefacts using the Parks Canada Classification System and the CHIN data dictionary. This work will be conducted in the museum and storage rooms where the collection is stored. The information will first
be documented on worksheets adapted for use by the intern and approved by the Museum and Archives Specialist, and then will be entered into a database using a predetermined template. With the completion of the data entry, the intern will compile condition
reports on objects in the collection and make recommendations on conservation care and potential digitization options for items within the collection. These reports plus the inventory will conclude the project and will form the collections management documentation
for the museum and archives. The intern will also work with the Museum and Archives Specialist to make recommendations for future exhibition and programming based on acquired knowledge of the collections and the mandate of the museum and archives. These recommendations
will be used to help determine an exhibition plan and programming strategy.
