Victoria, BC - The Bateman Foundation is pleased to announce <em>The Urban Sanctuary Project, </em>a community initiative that aims to inspire others to become involved in the practices of a healthy ecosystem, with a special focus on Migratory Bird Sanctuaries.
With increasing environmental concerns and decreasing bird populations worldwide, there is a need for appreciation and stewardship of our local ecosystems and the organisms within them. As 2017 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Convention
Act, an important step in the history of Canadian environmentalism, <em>The Urban Sanctuary Project
</em>will look to shine a spotlight on the migratory bird sanctuaries right in our own backyard through community displays, publications, symposiums, and informative and entertaining exhibits over the course of the year.<br>
<br>
100 years ago the Canadian government had the foresight to establish the Migratory Bird Sanctuary Act, taking action to limit destructive human impact of precious coastal eco-systems before it was too late. The 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Act of
2017 reminds us all that change is possible when a community comes together to create future nature sanctuaries for generations of Canadians to enjoy for another 100 years.<br>
<br>
The Bateman Foundation (including the Robert Bateman Centre) is proud to collaborate with the following community partners: Canadian Wildlife Service, Capital Regional District, Creatively United for the Planet, Eagle Wing Tours, Esquimalt Lagoon Stewardship
Initiative, Friends of Shoal Harbour, Friends of Victoria, Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Gorge Waterway Initiative, Sierra Club BC, Songhees Nation, Surfrider Foundation, Victoria Natural History Society, and World Fisheries Trust.<br>
<br>
The first initiative of the <em>Urban Sanctuary Project</em> will be an exhibition entitled <em>Boxed Sanctuary </em>on display at the Robert Bateman Centre in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation from December 1st to February 28th, 2017.<br>
<br>
What is sanctuary to you? A place of refuge or safety? A haven or hideaway? A place of serenity? <em>Boxed Sanctuary</em> is a collaborative of local artist’s work as they explore personal expressions of sanctuary. Selected artists have submitted mixed-media
boxes in various forms that are filled with images, reclaimed materials, hand-crafted objects, photographs or drawings that explore the question, "what is sanctuary?" Through this exhibit, the Robert Bateman Centre hopes to highlight the importance of sacred
spaces. Whether it is an old growth forest, or a childhood home, building a sense of place is a crucial backbone when engaging with our natural world. <br>

Nature is magic. Its beauty and power is ingrained in our culture. The Bateman Foundation, a national public charity, inspires a lasting relationship with nature through the lens of art, and is currently one of the only non-profits in Canada primarily using

<strong>The Surfrider Foundation - Vancouver Island Chapter</strong><br>
Surfrider's mission is the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. We are surfers, paddlers, students, teachers, and professionals, young and old. Surfrider’s volunteers witness the effect human activities
are having on our marine wildlife, including sea birds. Most of the waste found along local beaches are single-use plastics (straws, cups and plastic bags). Plastic debris degrades the ocean's beauty, sanctuary, and threatens our safety and that of marine
wildlife.<br>
<br>
The Boxed Sanctuary exhibit brings attention to the effects our daily choices have on our sanctuary. "Reduce, reuse and recycle" are calls to action. Protect what you love.<br>
