Rooted in History: Celebrating the Garry Oak Ecosystem</em></strong><br>

<strong>April 27, 2017, Victoria, BC</strong> - The unique beauty of the Garry oak has long since inspired the imagination of many west coast artists. In Canada, Garry oak ecosystems exist only on Southern Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and two areas
along the Fraser River. Less than 5% of these ecosystems remain in a near-natural condition; they are in decline, mainly due to habitat loss as a result of land development. The Garry oak ecosystem supports over 100 species of plants and animals all at risk.<br>
<br>
Using this distinctive local ecosystem as an inspiration, The Robert Bateman Centre is pleased to partner with the Garry Oak Ecosystems Recovery Team (GOERT) to present
<em>Rooted in History: Celebrating the Garry Oak Ecosystem</em>. The exhibit will highlight, not only the beauty but also the plight of this endangered environment as seen through the eyes of various artists. Selected artists have created two-dimensional works
inspired by the Garry oak ecosystem including glass mosaics, vinyl prints, photographs, and paintings. All works will be available for purchase with a percentage of the proceeds donated to the GOERT to support their environmental work. The exhibit aims to
raise awareness about the Garry oak ecosystems and inspire action for their conservation and restoration.<br>

"GOERT is very excited about the partnership with the Robert Bateman Centre in hosting our art show
<em>Rooted in History: Celebrating the Garry Oak Ecosystem</em>. Our core mandate is conservation of Garry oak ecosystems using research, education and stewardship to promote on the ground restoration and protection. People want to protect what they love and
the art we are showing embodies the passion that artists feel about the plants and animals in Garry oak ecosystems. We hope the public will share that passion,” says Susan Hannon, GOERT Board Member.<br>

“With inspiration from Robert Bateman, the Centre uses art to explore issues around nature, environmentalism, and conservation through our temporary exhibits,” says Peter Ord, Robert Bateman Centre Managing Director. “We are pleased to highlight the plight
of the Garry oak ecosystem and the work of GOERT through this beautiful exhibit.”<br>

<em>Rooted in History: Celebrating the Garry Oak System</em> can be viewed at the Robert Bateman Centre from May 3<sup>rd</sup> to June 25<sup>th</sup>. The Centre is open daily from 10am to 5pm and costs $10.00 for adults, $8.50 for students and seniors, and

<strong>About the Bateman Foundation and the Robert Bateman Centre: </strong>The Bateman Foundation, a national public charity, inspires a lasting relationship with nature through the lens of art, and is currently the one of the only non-profits in Canada primarily
