<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;mso-fareast-language:EN-CA">Whether in museums, at historic sites, within dense urban areas or at remote rural locations, interpreting the past is
 a two-way public communication process or dialogue about raising awareness and understanding of historical events, stories and memories from a variety of points of view to multiple different audiences.&nbsp;<br>
This course will explore such concepts as the social construction of history and collective memory, from whose points of view such narratives are remembered and expressed, the notion of positivistic versus constructivist forms of interpretation, what is more
 appropriate at places of memorialization versus educational institutions, including museums, and how to manage a range of contested discourses from &#8220;hot&#8221; to &#8220;cool&#8221;. &nbsp;Particularly problematic is the concept of dark heritage &#8211; remembering and interpreting events
 and sites of injustice, shame, conflict, death and atrocity &#8211; which is threaded throughout the course.<br>
A wide variety of interpretive techniques are explored from letting an event or place speak for itself (genus loci), to signage and displays, to print, verbal, audio and visual communications, to interpretive centres, and to restorations, reconstructions and
 recreations of the past. A number of case studies will be presented and discussed. The course will be delivered through lectures, discussions, working in small groups and participant presentations.<br>

 and lead non-profit organizations both large and small.&nbsp; It will focus on understanding the evolving and shared responsibilities for governance and leadership within non-profit and charitable organizations. There will also be an emphasis on setting priorities,
 developing strategies and cultivating partnerships to secure financial resources to realize an organization&#8217;s mission. As part of an organization&#8217;s evolution, the course will address the continuous need to recruit, engage and retain board members as well as
 plan for renewal and succession at the board table.&nbsp;<br>
Lectures, readings, case studies and interactive group discussions will be woven together to encourage participants to share their own experiences and the lessons they have learned from the vital work of governing and leading their organizations.<br>
This course will be of special interest to leaders of non-profit and charitable organizations including board members, staff and volunteer committee members of museums, galleries, arts councils, historic sites, performing arts facilities, festivals, First Nations
