The Greater Vernon Museum & Archives (GVMA) is excited to announce that the next Speaker Series presenter is retired Colonel Patrick M. Dennis, OMM, CD from Kitchner, ON. Col. (Ret’d) Dennis’ presentation entitled
‘Canadian Conscripts at War: 1918’ will take place on Monday May 14, from 7-8 pm. Col. Dennis
will speak about how conscripted soldiers (many of whom came from northern British Columbia) performed in combat, and provide heretofore unknown details regarding their historic contribution to the
success of the Canadian Corps in the Great War.

Following the presentation, those in attendance will have the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of his recently published book ‘Reluctant Warriors: Canadian Conscripts and the Great War’
which investigates a fascinating and undocumented chapter in Canadian history. As Dennis explains, “During the ‘Hundred
Days’ campaign of the First World War, over 30 percent of conscripts who served in the Canadian Corps became casualties. Yet, they were often considered slackers for not having volunteered.” Challenging long-standing myths, this book examines the participation
and performance of the conscripts in the Great War. ‘Reluctant Warriors’ provides fresh evidence that conscripts were good soldiers who made a crucial contribution to the war effort.
