FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 14, 2018

On April 12, during an award ceremony at its annual conference in Vancouver, the Canadian Museum Association presented national awards for outstanding achievement to the North Vancouver Museum and Archives’ Assistant
Director and to a long-standing volunteer. Shirley Sutherland, Assistant Director received the 2018 Award of Distinguished Service for her distinctive contribution to Canada’s museum community. In their commendation the award selection committee highlighted
Ms. Sutherland’s dedication to museum programming and education, and noted that she has built bridges between traditional museum areas of focus, the education system and the local community. During her long career in the museum sector Ms. Sutherland has worked
in a number of Lower Mainland institutions including Vancouver Centennial Museum, Vancouver Maritime Museum, Langley Museum and North Vancouver Museum and Archives, and in all her positions she has been an advocate for community-based school and public programming.
Throughout her career Ms. Sutherland has also provided mentorship for many young professionals who have since moved on to make their own contributions in the museum community.

During the same ceremony, the Canadian Federation of Friends of Museums and the Canadian Museums Association named Sharon J. Proctor as the recipient of the 2018 Museum Volunteer Award for her sustained and
outstanding commitment to the NVMA. Ms. Proctor worked for many years as the Curator of Education and Interpretation at the Vancouver Aquarium. Following her retirement Sharon joined the
Friends of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives Society where she is an active volunteer. During her 15 years with the NVMA, Sharon has revived the museum’s quarterly publication,
The Express and has researched and written over 100 articles focused on local sites, people and events. These articles became the basis for her book
Time Travel in North Vancouver.
