I have just received this notice of an action that deals with madrone,
Arbutus menziesii. I hope there will be some BC botanists and plant
ecologists who would attend this "Betablitz".

Subject: Pacific Madrone Mobile Phone App BetaBlitz
Hello,
I am a student at the University of Washington in Tacoma, studying
Geospatial Technologies. For my class project I have designed a mobile
phone data collector tool to be used specifically for collecting information
of Pacific madrone trees. I would like to go live with this application
soon but I need your assistance testing it more. Any assistance you can give
me with this would be much appreciated.
Next Saturday, on July 29, at 11:00 am, I would like to invite anyone that
would like to participate to join me at Maury Island Marine Park on Vashon
Island for a BetaBlitz. I have picked this location as it is a former
gravel mine and contains rare stands of the Pacific madrone trees. Plus, it
just seems like a good excuse to get outdoors! Besides having lots of
madrones, the park has more than one mile of natural shoreline with stunning
views of Mount Rainier and the Cascade Mountains. If you are not able to
join me but would still like to test out the mobile application that would
still be helpful information to me. Also, if you know of anyone that would
like to test the application please feel free to forward this email.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS:
Before downloading the application please be sure to turn on your Locational
Services on your mobile device. Click on the following link to review the
Pacific Madrone Volunteer Assessment Guide for links on how to do this as
well as for additional information on the types of data I are interested in:

To download the free application, go the app store on your phone and search
for Survey 123 or Survey 123 for ArcGIS. Once the application is downloaded
do not try to sign in, instead, find this email using your phone and click
on the following link:

The survey should begin downloading on your phone. Be patient as it may take
a while to download. Once it is downloaded you will be prompted to open the
survey. If you get an error message try downloading again. We have found
the app can be a bit temperamental at times.
The following is a YouTube tutorial on how to use the application:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryvO0D9B8qs
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryvO0D9B8qs&t=4s> &t=4s
Other things to note:
The application can collect data offline so if the geopoint map says it is
offline you can still collect data. If you have the Locational Services
activated on your phone and you take a picture of the specimen I will be
able to determine where it is located. If you submit the collection while
offline, your phone will store it until you are able to get online and then
there will be an option to send it. If you are unsure of how to answer a
question or the answer is not applicable simply skip the question or type in
N/A if there is an option to enter "Other". The only question you cannot
skip is taking a picture. The data will not be uploaded without an attached
picture.
And last but not least, once you have reviewed the survey application would
you please take a few moments to complete a survey about the application
found here:

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions and thank you in advance
for participating
