[BCMA Members Only] Looking for advice on how to employ a caretaker

Hi,

I am a little surprised that someone said you can’t do this. We have done this and both CRA and Employment Standards are ok with it. You do have to provide a T4 for the value of the space, but the value can be reduced from market value if the space is compromised because of the issue of lack of privacy or other issues related to the use. You also have to pay the appropriate payroll expenses and the value of the rent has to be at least minimum wage for the services that you get from the person. Now perhaps the issue is that you are not providing the space year round (ours is), and with recent changes to lease rules? I am curious as to whom told you that it was not possible?

Subject: [BCMA Members Only] Looking for advice on how to employ a caretaker

At the Friends of Fintry we are wanting to bring on a caretaker to live in our house and take care of it during the off season. We initially were offering to provide the home in lieu of salary but have been informed that we cannot do this.

Does anybody have experience with "live in" caretakers and could advise us on how to proceed?

Thanks,

Keith J Johnston
