The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria
is pleased to offer in conjunction with the Heritage Society of British
Columbia's conference in North Vancouver the following one-day learning
opportunity on Thursday, May, 31:
Coastal Connections: Collaborative Approaches to Marketing Maritime
Heritage
Collective approaches to developing and promoting themed heritage
experiences have proven very successful, as they highlight a range of
interconnected choices for visitors. This one-day workshop explores the
benefits and opportunities that a collaborative approach to "packaging"
provides to diverse sites, museums, heritage agencies and businesses,
using maritime heritage themes as a case study. You will discuss
practical ways in which marketing and packaging partnerships can be
managed and sustained, and develop a network of colleagues who share
your interests in showcasing life on the coast.
This workshop builds upon the Tourism BC Tourism Business Essentials(r)
workshops, "Tourism Packaging and Product Distribution: Introductory"
and "Tourism Packaging: Advanced - Selling Strategies" as a foundation
and customizes their content to the needs and realities of the heritage
sector. Using interactive presentations relating to current tourism
trends and forecasts, tourism/hospitality and heritage industry best
practices and the integration of heritage-related case studies, this
practical session provides you with valuable tools to develop your
product and partnership potential. Whether you're new to packaging, or
looking to improve or expand your products and partnerships, this
workshop will develop your understanding of:
* The basics of packaging
* Product research and development
* How to package with other suppliers
* How to effectively price for different sales channels
* The basic elements of marketing and sales
* Determining market demand
* The tour operator industry: understanding their needs and how to work
with them
* Working with local, regional, provincial and federal tourism office
networks: benefits, services and costs
* Preparing to be "export ready"
* How to develop effective partnerships, including: identifying
potential opportunities and partners; making initial contact; presenting
your product or service offerings, negotiating relationships and
creating effective and balanced agreements
* Lessons learned: evaluating packaging relationships
