T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse: We Have to Learn to Live Together in a Good Way
=20
In October 2006 an important ceremony took place at the Kilgard =
longhouse
just east of Abbotsford. A day long ceremony saw hundreds gather to =
welcome
home T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse, an powerful granite figure that holds the =
shxweli or life
force of a St=A8=AE:l=A8=AD ancestor, a man named T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse =
who was turned to
stone by the Transformer. Today, Herb Joe of the Tzeachten First Nation
carries the name T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse and along with his family is =
responsible for
the care of the figure known as Stone T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse. The story of =
the
transformation of the ancestral T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse to stone and the =
subsequent
journey that took the statue from the home of the Chilliwack tribe on =
the
Chilliwack River to the Burke Museum in Seattle and then back to Canada =
is
the subject of a new exhibit at the Chilliwack Museum that opens on May =
5.
=20
In the early 1970s Herb Joe, the newly elected chief of the Tzeachten =
Indian
Band, was encouraged by Chief Richard Malloway to carry a name that
represented his important position. Herb was the great-great-great-great
grandson of the last holder of the high status name, =
T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse, but for
generations the name was not passed on. Anti-potlatch laws, residential
schools and two particularly violent incidents near the Sumas border
crossing in the 1880s ensured that there were many aspects of Sto:lo =
culture
that were not publicly maintained for more than one hundred years. That
changed in the 1970s after anti-potlatch laws were repealed and elders =
and
tribal historians began reclaiming a culture that Stan Greene, a =
renowned
Salish artist, has described as a culture that =A1=B0For a long time =
went to
sleep=A1=B1.=20
=20
The Story of T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse, how a local doctor and his family =
were inspired
by the knowledge that they gained of the Chilliwack Tribe and Herb =
Joe=A1=AFs
personal journey rediscovering his roots and the real meaning of the
teachings of T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse are told in the exhibit. The lessons =
that we can
learn from T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse are universal, yet rooted in =
Sxw=A8=AExwiy=A8=A2m, the local
history of the distant past.=20
=20
The exhibit will also feature the works of a number of St=A8=AE:l=A8=AD =
artists,
part of the Todd Collection. Most of the pieces date from the 1970s and
1980s.=20
=20
The exhibit opens on May 5 with an opening ceremony starting at 1:00 =
p.m.
The exhibit runs until June 27. Further information can be obtained by
calling the Chilliwack Museum at 795-5210 or emailing cm_chin@dowco.com. =
