Hi everyone - we coordinated a street art project this summer that consisted
of four panels installed on posts on public property on which people were
invited to create street art/graffiti. Some of the artists provided us with
personal info while others remained anonymous in their work. The panels were
photodocumented each day by staff. The panels, along with a selection of
the photos, were exhibited in the gallery. We were pleased that we got a
very favourable response from these young artists as well as gallery
visitors to the project. What became even more amazing is that we had
requests for purchase of some of these panels as well as some of the
photographs (or simply asked to have the photos emailed to them). We also
had a request from a high school teacher to have copies of them for his
class room. My concern is how do we deal with copyright issues for these
public projects - can we simply disperse photos of these panels because they
were created in a public space, especially since we don't know who most of
the artists are?
Sincerely,
Manon Staiger
