*Railway Days: Revelstoke’s Community Festival*
*August 17 - 26, 2007*
All aboard for Revelstoke’s major ten-day festival commemorating
Revelstoke’s railway history and heritage. From model railroads, speeder
rides, magic lantern shows, music, and special exhibitions at all of the
community’s museums, Railway Days is a memorable celebration for the
whole family!
Our theme this year is “little railroaders” and we have added a number
of special events just for kids.
* Canadian Pacific’s “Puffer Belly” train will give free rides to
kids and a Thomas the Tank Engine will on display at the Railway
Museum.
* Operation Lifesaver will be at the Railway Museum to promote rail
safety with a new educational vehicle. The vehicle, nicknamed OLEV
(Operation Lifesaver Educational Vehicle), designed to bring OL's
message of Look, Listen and Live to more venues across the
country. The mobile classroom is equipped with the latest
technology to help get the message of rail safety out to the
public. Some of the features included in the design are DVD and CD
players, a laptop train simulator and a projector for use at
outside events. The virtual classroom is also equipped with
high-speed wireless Internet access.
* The Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre is offering a weeklong
children’s art camp, and the Revelstoke Museum & Archives has
children making their own biscuits and learning how pioneer
families made butter, ending with the children sitting down to an
enjoyable old-fashioned tea party.
* The BC Interior Forestry Museum has a Kid’s Quiz and a prize for
participants, and the Nickelodeon Museum will offer a children’s
matinee for their Grand Magic Lantern Show.
In town, Railway Days will include nightly concerts in Grizzly Plaza,
magic lantern presentations by “Professor Optix” at the Nickelodeon
Museum, speeder demonstrations at the CP “wye”, a flower show, a “taste
of Revelstoke” beer garden, and walking tours featuring Revelstoke’s
architectural gems.
Rail fans will get to see CP 5500, the first SD-40 locomotive purchased
by Canadian Pacific, and a chance to see slides and hear talks on
railway history. Special tours to the Rogers Pass Discovery Centre are
being offered and lunch is being served in the Railway Museum’s Business
Car #4.
