Prints from CPR Magic Lantern Slides 1885-1930

Touring exhibition offer from the Simon Fraser University Gallery:

This exhibition presents an affordable opportunity for your viewers to see
prints from historical CPR magic lantern slides that were originally
produced to promote tourism and immigration to Canada. These hand-coloured
slides have been scanned, restored in Photoshop and converted to digital
print form by Vancouver artist and magic lantern slide collector Michael
Lawlor, who has spent up to 30 hours cleaning the flaws in each image. The
selection was made by Michael Lawlor and SFU Gallery Director Bill Jeffries.

The original photographers¹ names are not included; as they become known,
they may be added. The works are a mix of rarely seen photographic material
and iconic Canadian images, such as ³the last spike.² The prints are
clearly marked ³2007² to address viewer confusion that point has been
useful in launching discussions about exactly what viewers are seeing.

The show will be of interest to new Canadians, theorists of analogue to
digital transfers, archivists, and anyone wishing to see glimpses of
Canada¹s past. The show has proven that it can launch discussions of
colonialism, copyright, historical representation, image preservation, uses
of arbitrary colour, immigration, and Canada as ³a land of milk and honey.²
