UBC Library Vault Unveils Rare Collections at www.ubcvault.ca

Gateway to a treasure trove of images and stories

Vancouver, B.C., December 17, 2007 - UBC Library's collection of rare
treasures has been largely hidden from the public eye - until now. Deep
in the vault of the Library and hidden across campus are exceptional
collections of rare books, manuscripts, fine art, maps and archival
material in climate-controlled storage. UBC Library has selected
highlights from its collections and they are now available to view
online at the UBC Library Vault: www.ubcvault.ca

UBC Library's collections have grown in value and stature over the
University's 100-year history and continue to support teaching and
research by scholars at UBC and around the world. UBC Library Vault
items range from the meticulous, such as zoological giraffe drawings by
an 18th-century naturalist, to the monumental, including pages from a
German book of prayer created at the dawn of western printing in 1500.=20

"The Library Vault is a unique opportunity to reach out to those who
value and support the second-largest university library in Canada," says
Peter Ward, University Librarian pro tem. "We are creating an online
community that is interested in the Library's vibrant collections and
wants to learn about their stories."

Site visitors are encouraged to sign up for the e-newsletter, a free
service that will highlight select Vault images along with detailed
descriptions.

Special gifts inspired by the collections, including gift card sets
featuring holiday-based images and other themes, are also available for
purchase online and in person at UBC Library. A portion of all sale
proceeds is directed to UBC Library's many funds and endowments.
