Canada's Lighthouses, Rich History - Uncertain Future
With the widespread use of modern navigation technology such as the Global
Positioning System (GPS), the future of lighthouses as aids to navigation is
under constant review in Canada. As a result, many of these unique, maritime
structures that served mariners for so many years are under threat. Join
Nova Scotia Lighthouse Society president Barry MacDonald as he examines not
only the early history of Canadian lighthouses but also what is being done
to ensure they will survive for future generations to enjoy. The
presentation will include a look into the "Heritage Lighthouse Protection
Act, Bill S-220" as well as examples of what is being done across Canada to
preserve and find new uses for these grand, old beacons.
Barry MacDonald grew up in the small coastal village of Ingonish, on Cape
Breton Island. His grandfather, Robert MacDonald, was a lighthouse keeper in
the early 1930's. Since joining the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation
Society in 1996, Barry has served on the Lighthouse Protection Act committee
and has been Society President since 2003. Retired from a 35 year career in
the telephone industry, Barry and his wife Anne Marie reside in Seaforth,
Nova Scotia, in a replica lighthouse they built as a retirement home.
